Weekly Message from Our Director and CEO, Stephan Jost

Hello everyone,

  • It was good to see so many of you at Town Hall on Tuesday when I spoke about recent exhibitions, acquisitions and the new access model. In my weekly message for the next several weeks I will start to call out our values, beginning with “lead with contemporary relevance.” We should seek to have our work be relevant to what is happening in the world today, whether it’s relating the growth of Toronto to the recent Impressionism in the AGO of Industry exhibit or technology and consumption with Hito Steyerl: This Is the Future.
  • Do take some time to enjoy Grange Park, which has become one of the most used parks in our city – certainly that was evident this summer! From the hawks to local community groups to AGO campers, it has been full of activity these past few months.
  • With an employee base of 600+, there are always new faces joining us at the museum. Welcome to those who have joined us in recent weeks. And thank you to those who have gone on or will be departing soon to other opportunities – we are grateful for your important contributions to the AGO.

Enjoy the long weekend,

Stephan

Happy Labour Day

Weekly Message from Our Director and CEO, Stephan Jost

Hello everyone,

  • I took a few close supporters of the AGO through the Brian Jungen exhibit on Wednesday evening. The galleries were buzzing with visitors and my guests remarked on the palpable energy throughout the building. I enjoyed viewing Brian’s works one last time and I hope you have the chance to visit Zacks before the show closes this weekend.
  • A new acquisition was installed in the Fudger Memorial Gallery this week – a work by Gustave Caillebotte that was part of a long saga related to the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board (CCPERB), as you might recall from my post of earlier this year. Through a legal process involving other museums from across Canada, we were able to resolve the situation in a satisfactory manner. The end result is that there is an important Impressionist painting in the museum for our public.
  • I will miss seeing AGO campers exploring galleries and having fun in Grange Park when camp ends this month. Every morning when I walk into the building I have been greeted by their youthful enthusiasm and curiosity. It takes A LOT of people to run smooth camp sessions and I appreciate everyone’s focus to ensure the kids are safe, learn and have fun.

Enjoy the weekend,

Stephan

Update: Our First Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Survey for volunteers

A quick note to say thank you to all of our volunteers who have already completed our first-ever Culture, Diversity and Inclusion Survey. Our participation rate is high and we really appreciate you taking the time to voluntarily answer a few questions!

If you haven’t done so already, please consider taking a few moments to complete the survey; the more responses, the better! This will help us benchmark the needs in our volunteer community, and help us shape future programs and supports. If you think your voice is vital, please consider sharing it, via this voluntary, anonymous survey.

Survey closes September 3!
