Access FAQs

Before May 25:

When does this admission model go into effect?
This new model goes into effect on May 25, 2019. Advance sales of the AGO Annual Pass begin on May 9 via the AGO website, in person, and over the phone, but it cannot be used until May 25 (and will be valid until May 25, 2020).

If I buy my AGO Annual Pass on May 9, will I receive it right away?
The Pass will be delivered to you via email for you to save on your phone (in an app like Wallet), but it may take some time to be processed. You will receive it prior to the effective date of May 25. Purchases on or after May 25 will be processed instantly.

General:

What if I don’t have a mobile phone for the digital card?
Passholders who don’t have a mobile phone can stop by the AGO’s Welcome Desk and present a photo I.D. to obtain a general admission ticket for entry.

What does the AGO Annual Pass cover?
The Pass offers unlimited admission to the AGO Collection and all special exhibitions for one year from date of purchase.

Can someone else use my pass?
AGO Annual Passes are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Does the AGO Annual Pass give me access to AGO programs and events?
Any programs and events that are included in general admission are free to AGO Annual Pass holders. As is the case now, some programs and events are separately ticketed and/or surcharged, but this information is publicized in advance. Annual Pass holders pay public rates on talks and programs. For discounted rates, please check out our membership program.

Do visitors 25 and under get their own digital card?
Visitors 18-25 must sign up for a free AGO Annual Pass. Visitors who are under 18 may sign up for a pass if they wish (using a valid email address) or may simply enter without a pass.

Aren’t children free already?
Currently children 5 and under are free. Now everyone 25 and under is free.

What is the price if you don’t get an Annual Pass?
A single-visit ticket for adults is $25 for the AGO Collection and all special exhibitions. An AGO Annual Pass is only $10 more, and includes unlimited access for an entire year.

Does timed ticketing and booking work the same way as always?
The AGO is piloting a walk-up system of admissions. There is no need to pre-book tickets or timed slots for exhibitions.

I heard this model is a one-year pilot. Will it continue? What happens if I buy an Annual Pass and the program is discontinued?
We are piloting this new model for one year in order to test it out, learn from our visitors and make adjustments as necessary. An Annual Pass will be effective for one year from its date of purchase, no matter when you buy it.

What is the difference between a membership and an annual pass?
Annual Passes offer admission only. AGO Membership offers a wide variety of benefits that are not available to Annual Pass holders, such as Members’ only Previews prior to the opening of special exhibitions, exclusive access to the Norma Ridley Members’ Lounge, coat check, and discounts in shopAGO, AGO Bistro and for courses and classes. Members also have pride in knowing that their support allows the AGO to fulfill its mandate to ensure access to art for all.

Other discounts and access programs:

Do I still get a discount using my Presto card?
The AGO Annual Pass represents a significant discount to regular admission, so other promotional programs such as the Presto card discount will be ending.

Does your support persons policy change with this new model?
A support person accompanying a visitor with disabilities is provided with free admission to the AGO.

A support person is an individual hired or chosen by a person with a disability to provide services or assistance with communication, mobility, personal care, medical needs or with access to goods or services. The visitor with a disability pays regular admission to the AGO; no fee will be charged for the support person.

Will your access programs change?
No – we will continue our many programs, including Access to Art group visits and workshops for disability groups.

Will you still offer free admission to Indigenous Peoples?
Yes, the AGO will continue to offer complimentary entry to all Indigenous Peoples, including all programs and events that are included with General Admission.

Will your Community Membership Program, Community Admission Passes, and Neighbourhood Access Program be changing?
All of our community programs remain in effect. Additionally, we will continue our partnership with the Toronto Public Library on the Museum Access Pass, which allows anyone to sign out free AGO passes from the library, and with the Institute for Canadian Citizenship which also offers free passes.

Are Wednesday nights still free?
Yes, the AGO’s longstanding tradition of free Wednesday nights continues as normal.

Why is there no senior citizen’s rate?
The AGO Annual Pass represents a significant discount to regular admission and offers extraordinary value. At the current senior’s rate, it costs $16 for general admission and $21.50 for special exhibitions. The $35 annual pass offers unlimited admission to the AGO Collection and all special exhibitions, all year. Free Wednesday nights continue, as well as other community programs that offer free access.

Are the existing General Admission complimentary passes still valid?
Yes, the GA complimentary passes remain valid until December 22, 2019 (which is noted on the back of the tickets) and after May 25 they will also apply to special exhibitions. We will eventually design new ones.

Capacity and time-ticketing:

Will this make the museum more crowded?
Although the AGO will welcome more people under the new admission model, we always manage capacity effectively. There will still be days and times when the museum is quieter.

Without timed ticketing won’t your exhibitions get overcrowded? What if I arrive and can’t get in?
For future exhibitions with increased capacity and demand, a timed ticketing system may be used. The AGO will determine this on a case-by-case basis as necessary.
