Prints and Drawings of the French Revolution
The notion of art as propaganda was deeply rooted in the Western tradition. During the French Revolution, the arts acquired a strategic political function. Revolutionary officials were keenly aware of the power of images. Prints, which were reproducible in large quantities and comprehensible even to those who could not read, were the closest to popular or mass art than any other form associated with the Revolution.
