AGO People – Sasha Suda

Dear Colleagues,

It is with pride that I announce that Sasha Suda, Curator of European Art and the R. Fraser Elliot Chair of Prints and Drawings, has been appointed the Director and CEO of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. This is an undeniably exciting opportunity for Sasha. I have been supportive of her efforts to take on this role.

Since her arrival at the AGO in 2011, Sasha has left an indelible mark on the Gallery through her vision, scholarship, thoughtfulness and determination. Her commitment to creating accessible and compelling experiences for audiences has led to many successful exhibitions over her time here.

Recently, Sasha has led the upcoming Early Rubens, a major international loan exhibition conceived and co-curated by her in partnership with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Sasha is also responsible for several transformational acquisitions to the AGO Collection, including a highly coveted boxwood prayer bead, a rare 19th century portrait bust by Georges Depinay, two late Medieval panel paintings from Belgium and works on paper by Martin Schongauer, Kara Walker, Vija Celmins and others.

The opportunity to lead the National Gallery will allow Sasha to help to shape the cultural landscape of Canada at its flagship museum. Her last day at the AGO is March 4, and she begins work at the National Gallery on April 18.

In short, I am very proud of Sasha and will miss her immensely.

Sincerely,

Stephan
