Look: Forward- What’s Opening & Closing Soon

Throughout the Look:Forward project we’ll be keeping you in the loop with regular updates so you know when galleries are closing and re-opening.

Newly Installed:

Last week, Tom Thomson’s iconic The West Wind joined other Canadian works in Fudger Rotunda. Also added is the intriguing Old Sun by Adrian Stimson. Adrian was recently awarded the 2018 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts, so it’s particularly timely to be able to share his work with AGO visitors. We’ve also added an introductory panel and extended labels – in three languages – English, French and Anishinaabemowin.
In March, we added Nevelson’s Night Zag IV and Segal’s The Butcher Shop to Sharp Gallery. This installation, led by Kenneth Brummel, is on a key path for student groups visiting the AGO, and the space feels animated by the presence of these works.

Closed:

Jackman Gallery (238) is under renovation, and will be installed with Canadian art later this spring, as part of the McLean Centre renovation.
Behind construction hoarding, major renovations continue in the McLean Centre – interior walls have been demolished, and the new spaces will start to emerge soon.

New Rotations:

We’ve said good bye to our Rock Posters installation in the Prints and Drawings Suite (139, 140, 141 and 142) to make room for an installation of very moving works by Käthe Kollwitz, led by Brenda Rix. It opened on Saturday, April 7th.
Mulvihill Gallery (127) has recently been reinstalled with a selection of etchings, selected by Carolyn Mensing, featuring Whistler and Bracquemond, among others. Carolyn and interpretive planner Laura Robb have added magnifying glasses into the installation, so visitors can get a closer look at these delicate works.
In Bovey Gallery (220) the installation of work by Annie Pootoogook has now been dismantled, and a new range of beautiful works by Shuvinai Ashoona are now installed. Some of these, from Ashoona’s Polar World Series have never been shown before.
Artworks in Odette and McEwen (128 + 129) are also changing – by the end of April, you’ll see a wide spectrum of albums featuring photographs from the World War I era, opening in time for CONTACT. Until April 28th, both these galleries will be closed.
*All dates are for internal use only and are subject to change*
