Weekly Message from Our Director and CEO

Hello Everyone,

  • Welcome Julian Cox! Our new Deputy Director & Chief Curator arrived earlier this week, and that makes me happy. Julian joins us from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and has also served at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His curatorial field of expertise is photography. Please say hi and introduce yourself if you come across Julian in the Gallery.
  • Earlier this week, I enjoyed meeting the artist Haegue Yang, whose work will be exhibited at the AGO in 2020 (not public knowledge yet, so keep under your hat). A South Korean artist who lives and works in Berlin and Seoul, she is one of the leading artists of her generation and the AGO owns her playful work Sonic Dance-Twin Brother, which I hope will be back on view soon. Renowned artist Rebecca Belmore was also at the AGO this week in advance of her upcoming show this summer. I love it when we are able to spend time with artists.
  • Lisa Clements and I visited New York City earlier this week.  Our international PR agency, PAVE Communications & Consulting, arranged meetings with: The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The Art Newspaper, ARTnews and artnet News. We met with journalists and editors to begin to develop a deeper relationship with NYC media.  The AGO has many incredible stories that we want to share with the world – one of our strategic priorities is to raise the profile of the AGO internationally.

Enjoy the weekend,

Stephan
