A Message from Our Director and CEO

October 4, 2017

Hello Everyone,

I am extremely proud of the work that Andrew did while he was a curator here at the AGO. There are exhibitions like Every. Now. Then. and Idea of North that I have seen and others like Alex Colville that predate my time. I am proud of the recent Canadian acquisitions such as the magnificent Ruth Cuthand work. But let us remember that all of these efforts were not a solo performance. The exhibitions were a success because our staff and supporters made them happen. We designed and animated them, we promoted them, brought visitors in and greeted each guest.

I read what Andrew said about the AGO in The Toronto Star. I have deep disagreements with how he frames both the AGO and the work that is being done. For example,  I am proud of the extraordinary Look:Forward project. What Kenneth and David did with the Modern galleries along with the quality work of LASS staff is exquisite. The same applies to the European and Photography galleries. It would have been interesting to see what Andrew would have done with the Canadian reinstallation but truth be told I am looking forward to what Georgiana and Wanda will create.

We have and will continue to create a more diverse and inclusive museum. These successes predate my arrival (and indeed Andrew’s) and will and must continue long into the future. This is a shared endeavour amongst all of us that is positive and exciting, and we have made real strides in the past couple of years. While Andrew made many contributions to these efforts, I want to make clear that he was one of many. At times it is a challenge to work here at the AGO; most worthwhile things are not easy. And, while we are not perfect, we are always seeking to do better.

I have full confidence in all of us to move forward together – staff, volunteers and board. Let’s not forget why we’re here and keep focused on our public.

Stephan
