Prints & Drawings Talk for February: Art & Artists of The Grange

Henri Perre (1875)

This month P&D presents: The Grange

The inspiration for the talk comes from the collection left to the AGO by Goldwin Smith – essentially artists at The Grange – and evolved into telling the story of The Grange and its occupants through the artists. Given that The Grange is the oldest surviving brick house in Toronto (1819), the talk will help kick off Canada’s  Sesquicentennial celebrations.

Jane will be using four works depicting the house, including Henri Perré’s (GS74), as well as related works by Frederick Verner, Marmaduke Matthews and Lucius O’Brien. The latter is recorded in Mr. Chin’s pantry book for 1898 (E.P. Taylor library) as having attended dinner at The Grange on June 14. These artists, together with George Reid, are all associated with the circle that frequented The Grange and with the founding of the OSA and the RCA prior to Harriette Boulton Smith’s gift of the house the the Art Museum of Toronto.

The works in question will be on display in P&D in February and in the Treasury after that.

Talk by: Jane Smith
