Since reactions can be severe and long lasting, we should all be aware of how we can help our sensitive colleagues and visitors.

What kinds of health reactions can scented products cause?

Individuals can experience a variety of symptoms, including headache, sore throat, runny nose, sinus congestion, wheezing, shortness of breath, dizziness, anxiety, irritability, nausea, fatigue, visual disturbances, mental confusion or inability to concentrate.

These reactions can have a serious impact on a person’s ability to function normally. Even if exposure is only at work, the effects may last for hours or even days.

What kinds of products can trigger reactions?

Common scented personal products including perfume, cologne, aftershave, deodorant, soap, shampoo, hairspray, body spray, makeup and powders..

 Products with added scents including coloured markers, glues, candles, air fresheners, household sprays and cleaners, facial tissues, fabric softeners, and laundry detergents..

How can I help?

  • Use scent-free personal products before coming to work
  •  Do not apply or spray any scented products in your work area or in public areas such as washrooms, change rooms or eating areas.
  •  If you do use scented products occasionally, please use them sparingly.

As a general guideline, a scent should not be detectable more than an arm’s length away from you.

f you have used a scented product for a long time, be aware that your own ability to detect the scent may be reduced.

What should I do if I am sensitive to scented products used by others?

Since many people are unaware of the potential health effects of scented products, if you feel comfortable, approach the individual in a respectful manner.

Let them know that you react to scented products, asking for their understanding and cooperation in avoiding exposure.
