Happy National Volunteer Week!  April 12 – 18

National Volunteer Week is a week-long celebration where registered charities, not-for-profit organizations and volunteer centres pause to thank and recognize their volunteers.

On behalf of the Gallery, your staff supports, our visitors and your fellow volunteers, I want to say THANK YOU to all of our wonderful, dedicated and supportive volunteers – each and every one of you! Newest on our curatorial team, recent hires Adelina Vlas, Associate Curator, Contemporary Art, and Kenneth Brummel, Assistant Curator, Modern Art, are meeting volunteers for the first time, and teaming -up to lead us on a tour of their AGO favourites. Learn more about their personal journeys to the AGO, early art influences, and what got them interested in curatorial work in the first place!

Interpretive Planning workshop, with Shiralee Hudson
Imagine the exhibition as a blank slate – it’s a hard thing to do, isn’t it? That’s because many of our exhibitions are layered with messages and meaning thanks to the good work of our interpretive planning team. Join Shiralee Hudson, Interpretive Planner, as she explains what it’s like to approach an exhibition with an IP’s eye, and leads you through the same exercise, in-gallery. (This is a hands-on, participatory workshop!)

Women Artists’ Archives and Wikipedia Activism with Amy Furness
As in other areas of endeavour, women in Canada have faced many obstacles in pursuing careers as artists, and in gaining recognition for their achievements. AGO Archivist Amy Furness takes us on a tour of the Women Artists’ Archives, and talks about recent Wikipedia activism that aims to highlight the talent of these overlooked artists.
