Our Volunteer Executive: SHELAGH BARRINGTON

What is your title on the Volunteer Executive (VE)?

I am Chair of AGO Alumni.

Shelagh Barrington

What is your VE role?

I hope to ensure that past AGO Volunteers continue to be recognized for their past service, and are welcomed at the AGO by current volunteers and staff.

What is your volunteer background?

I joined the AGO volunteer community in 1996 as a Docent (Gallery Guide). In 2000 I became a volunteer with the AGO School Touring group, while also serving as Co-chair with the Weekend/Evening Gallery Guides. As Editor of our print newsletter, Vistas, 2008-11, I joined the Volunteer Executive with responsibility for communications. I then took an 8-month leave to travel and write. Upon my return, I was asked to form the AGO Alumni Group, and rejoined the VE in 2013 as its Chair.

What do you like best about being an AGO volunteer?

As a Weekend/Evening Gallery Guide, my most enjoyable moments are those I share with visitors as they connect with a work of art, in a new way. As the Alumni Chair, what I like best is connecting with old friends.
