A Message from Education and Public Programming: Online voting now open for the 2013 Aimia | AGO Photography Prize

A MESSAGE FROM EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMMING

Dear Colleagues,

What is happening?

  • Online voting is now open for the 2013 Aimia | AGO Photography Prize on the Prize website and on Facebook.

What is the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize?

  • The Aimia | AGO Photography Prize is Canada’s largest award for contemporary photography, recognizing photographers from around the world whose work has exhibited extraordinary potential over the past five years.
  •  A partnership between the AGO and Aimia, a global leader in loyalty and Signature Partner of the AGO’s Photography Collection, the prize was formerly known as The Grange Prize. It was re-launched earlier this year with a new name, a greater international focus and a new $20,000 national scholarship program to foster the next generation of Canadian photographic artists.
  • The $50,000 prize is among Canada’s largest art and culture prizes and the first major art prize in the world to let the public choose its winner.

Who is shortlisted this year?

  •  The 2013 shortlist, selected by a jury of leading photography experts, is: Edgardo Aragón (Mexico), LaToya Ruby Frazier (USA), Chino Otsuka (Japan/UK) and Erin Shirreff (Canada).
  • The shortlist was chosen from a longlist of 14 international photographers selected via an international nomination process earlier this year.

Who was on the jury?

The 2013 jury was led by Elizabeth Smith, lead juror and former Executive Director, Curatorial Affairs at the AGO. It also included Kader Attia, French-Algerian artist and Urs Stahel, director, curator, and editor of Fotomuseum Winterthur.

How can I vote?

  • Voting is now open and continues until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2013.
  • You can vote in three ways:

o   At the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize website (www.aimiaagophotographyprize.com). This website, created by AGO New Media, features a sleek new design, interactive and shareable features, dynamic videos and expanded information about each artist.

o   On the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize Facebook page (www.facebook.com/AimiaAGOPhotographyPrize).

o   Beginning September 11, you can also vote inside the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize 2013 Exhibition in Lind Gallery, which will be on view through January 5, 2014.

Are there any events planned to celebrate the Aimia | AGO Photography Prize?

  •  The AGO will open its exhibition with a public launch party on September 11 in Walker Court featuring remarks by our nominators and jurors.
  • On September 12, all four artists will participate in a panel discussion in Baillie Court with lead juror Elizabeth Smith; AGO associate curator of photography, Sophie Hackett; and two of our nominators, Jennifer Blessing, senior curator of photography at the Guggenheim museum, and Helga Pakasaar, curator at Presentation House Gallery in Vancouver. Tickets can be purchased at: http://www.ago.net/meet-the-artists-aimia-ago
  • The winner will be announced during the November edition of AGO First Thursdays on November 7.
