A message from Corporate and Public Affairs: Looking for advice on a community initiative for the Ai Weiwei exhibition

Dear Volunteers,

What is happening?

  • We are looking for input from AGO staff and volunteers to formulate a community initiative for the upcoming Ai Weiwei exhibition: Ai Weiwei: According to What?.
  • One of the works in the show, Remembrance 2010, is a voice recording listing the names of 5,000 students who died during the Sichuan earthquake.
  • We are planning to invite members of our local Chinese-reading/Mandarin-speaking community to participate in a group reading of these names and would love your help in identifying key community organizers and possible participants. Similarly, if you are a Chinese-reading/Mandarin-speaking volunteer who would like to get involved, please get in touch.

Ai Wei Wei

Why are we doing this?

  • We are excited to be able to bring this exhibition to the Gallery – it’s one of the largest solo shows for the artist ever held and we are the only Canadian venue on the North American tour.
  • In planning for this exhibition, the Gallery has decided to reach out to our local community to raise awareness of the artist and the issues that he cares deeply about, as well as engage them in the exhibition itself.
  • We believe that this initiative will be a powerful tribute to the young people who lost their lives in 2005, and will add real meaning to the visitor experience.

 What do I contact?

  • Please contact Bev Carret, Manager of Government and Community Relations ([email protected]; 416 979 6660 ext. 477) if you would like to share any thoughts or ideas or would like to get involved.

Next steps

  • Stay tuned for further details as they become available.  And we may call upon you again for advice!

Sincerely,

Bev
