Ontario Volunteer Service Award Winner Profile: Rhonda Katz

Six exceptional AGO volunteers were recognized  last month for their service.  This week we learn a bit more about Rhonda Katz, Gallery Guide (20 year award).

Rhonda with Holly at the Volunteer Annual Party, May 2019

How did you get started at the AGO?

In 1992 after 7 years, my radio show at CFRB, “Help Me Rhonda “ was ending and I was thinking, “Where could I get an occasional gig where I could talk a lot?” Because in my psychotherapy practice it was more important to listen! At that very time there was an ad in the paper for “Education Docents” needed by the AGO for the upcoming big Group of Seven show; so I interviewed, got accepted and got exceptional training.

How long have you been at the AGO? What roles have you played here?

I have been here since that show in 1992! First I used to do tours with high school students, which were curriculum-based; then studio programs; then back to school groups after a short break during Transformation; then to Daily Tours at present. I am also the Lead Guide for Tuesdays, which are a fantastic group.

What is your background?

I have a Masters of Education, specializing in Applied Psychology; Broadcaster, Columnist, Keynote speaker and a private psychotherapy practice for 36 years.

What are your outside interests/other volunteer gigs?

I love jazz, theatre, dance and art! I am a qualified Aquafitness instructor and teach through the summer.

What is your favourite work in the gallery?

My favourite in the gallery is the small Tissot, The Convalescent.

What is your most satisfying moment at the gallery?

I love it when occasionally I get someone who wants to tip me! I tell them to go get dessert at the cafe. Very sweet.

Thanks Rhonda!  Aquafit, eh?  Perhaps a water-themed tour is in order…!
