Ontario Volunteer Service Award Winner Profile: Lara McLenan Ben

Six exceptional AGO volunteers were recognized  last month for their service.  This week we learn a bit more about Lara McLenan Ben, Information Guide (5 year award).

How did you get started at the AGO?

I started volunteering at the AGO in response to a call for audio guides for an upcoming David Bowie exhibit.

How long have you been here? What roles have you played?

I began as an audioguide in 2013, then switched to Information Guides, where I’ve been for the past 5 years.  I was day captain for the past 4 years for my Sunday morning group.

What is your background? What are your other volunteer gigs?

I work as a social worker in both a rehabilitation facility and an emergency department in a hospital in Toronto.  I am a yoga instructor who volunteers once a week in a seniors mental health day program.   I enjoy visiting art galleries on my travels and the AGO stands out by far.

What has been your favourite show at the AGO?

My favourite exhibit at the AGO during my time as a volunteer was the Jean-Michel Basquiat show as it drew such a diverse audience to the AGO.

What is your favourite memory at the gallery?

My favourite memory at the gallery has been working with such amazing staff (Paul Ayers) and fellow volunteers on my Sunday morning team.

Thanks Lara!
