Artful Conversation for March: Art and Truth – Seeking the Universal

Auguste Rodin, The Thinker, 1880; cast early 1920s

The Universal in art – from the sublime to the ridiculous. Good art allows you to see beyond the literal and invites you to examine the human condition from a more universal perspective. Although the context of each age and culture creates the ethos for the work, the artist can take you behind the curtain of his/her time and reveal feelings and ideas that link us all.

This tour will look at devotional art from the Baroque, portraits from different ages, landscapes, sculptures and abstract art. Questions we’ll consider include: What are some of the universal themes found in art? How are some artists able to invoke the universal, while others create literal representations with little or no universal resonance? Does art need to be universal to be good?
