Winter-related slips and falls

Did you know?
• Every year in Canada, more than 42,000 workers are injured due to falls
• For slips and trips, 67% of falls happen on the same level

Common causes of slips:
• Occur from little traction between footwear and walking surface
• Weather hazards, wet or oily surfaces, spills, loose mats

How to prevent incidents and injuries from slips and falls:
• Understand that everyone shares responsibility for preventing slips, trips and falls
• Report hazards immediately to your supervisor, and complete accident/incident reports
• Wear appropriate footwear (low heels, warm, waterproof, ice/snow traction, slip-resistant)
• Use handrails on stairs
• Take extra care when entering/exiting buildings and vehicles
• Avoid icy areas or areas with poor lighting, when possible
• Walk slowly and carefully around snow banks or other obstacles
• Plan ahead of time and do not rush to get to where you are going
• Clean up spills promptly from melted snow that falls off your boots
• Remove debris, snow and ice from walkways (if you are able to do so safely)
• Use salt, sand or other anti-slip material to keep walkways clear
• Monitor weather reports for advance warning of slippery or hazardous weather conditions

By following these tips, you can help us to control hazards and maintain a healthy and safe environment at the AGO.
