Public opening celebration: Tunirrusiangit: Kenojuak Ashevak & Tim Pitsiulak

On Wednesday June 13 (6-9 pm), join the Tunirrusiangit curatorial team in Walker Court for a celebration that includes remarks by the curatorial team, preparing and serving seal harvested by a member of the Kinngait community, and jewellery and clothing for sale by Inuit designers.

Celebrate the work of Kenojuak Ashevak (1927–2013) and Timootee (Tim) Pitsiulak (1967–2016), whose beautiful works of art capture everyday life with grace, humour and originality. Led by a team of Inuit curators, this exhibition presents a dynamic vision of contemporary Inuit life – a vision reflected through the art, the text and the choice of celebration. The serving of seal has cultural and historical importance to Inuit. Its presence at the AGO honours the living traditions that sustain Inuit and that inspired the art of Kenojuak Ashevak and Tim Pitsiulak. The serving of seal also invites an opportunity to celebrate Inuit creative expression, autonomy, ingenuity, and resilience.

“For Inuit, to share seal meat is to honour family and community. As Inuit curators, we wanted to honour Kenojuak and Timootee’s spirits and brilliance by doing what happens on kitchen floors, igloo floors, rocky shorelines and sea ice now and since time immemorial – by eating seal meat. For us, this is a symbol of unity and peace.” — Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory

Everyone is welcome!
