The Madonna and Child is one of the most popular iconographic image of the Medieval and Renaissance periods of art and beyond. Mary Rochon will explore the depiction of the mother and child relationship by asking how does each artist capture this subject, does the artist succeed, and does art express emotion in a compelling way? The first encounter will be with a Spanish carving from 1166 AD and we will wander chronologically looking at a variety of artworks, materials, and styles.
