What: The Story in the Portrait

A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.

 This best describes the role of the artist in portraying an individual but both the sitter and we as the viewer bring another dimension to the work. In this tour we will discuss the narrative behind the portrait while creating a story of our own. Who is the person, what are they thinking, where have they just been are but a few of the questions that will be raised all the while blending historical details that are known.

 Some of the works included in the tour will be Augustus John’s Marchesa Casati, Frans Hall’s Portrait of Isaak Abrahamsz and  Fabritius’s Portrait of a Seated Woman.
