Yael Dunkelman, a long time Art Rental and Sales volunteer and AGO member, passed away on May 29, 2016. Yael began volunteering with Art Rental and Sales in 1997, and moved into the Volunteer Alumni program a few years ago. She was an active AGO Contemporary Curatorial Committee member. Yael is mentioned in a Globe & Mail piece about AR&S, in which she describes how she helps find the right pieces for clients. A recent obituary can be found here.
Yael and her husband Ben opened their eponymous Dunkelman Gallery in Toronto in 1967, featuring abstract sculpture and 20th century paintings; they provided early studio space for Sorel Etrog in the Tip Top Tailor building, which was then owned by the Dunkelman family. Although short-lived, the Gallery mounted several large and ambitious exhibitions which brought new Canadian talent to the attention of the international art community. Yael speaks about Sorel Etrog and the 1960s Toronto art scene here.
Yael was a wonderful supporter of the Gallery and will be much missed.
