What do you do at the AGO? And what do you enjoy the most about your job?
Hello, my name is Vanessa! I am the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Staff & Volunteer Services. My role is essentially supporting different areas of staff and volunteer resources, including Deb O’Leary, Director,Staff & Volunteer Resources; Holly Procktor,  Coordinator, Volunteer Resource Management; and our incoming Manager of Staff Relations.

Where did you grow up? If not Toronto, how did you end up here?
I grew up within Toronto at Yonge & Davisville, a little further up from the heart of the city. It has certainly transformed since I was younger. Before it was considered the quiet part of the city, but now it is an area that is buzzing with new things.

Is there something that you’d be willing to share that many people would not know about you? For example, do you do anything creative or adventurous outside of the Gallery?

I previously came from a sports organization (Toronto 2015 Pan Am Parapan Am Games). I worked with volunteers at the UDAC and Pan Am Aquatic Centre. Aligned with my previous sports background, I enjoy doing sport-recreational activities such as rock climbing, soccer, and hopefully sky diving this summer. Although, I was raised in the city I still love to do outdoor activities.

What is your all-time favourite movie, musical artist or piece or book, and why?

I like feel good movies that make you smile and laugh. I grew out of scary movies and would dread to watch one if I had to now. I enjoy movies from the 80s and 90s. One of my favourite movies is “Father of the Bride.” There is no fancy cinematography, or script, but the movie makes you happy. Feel good movies are my go to!

Do you have a favourite work of art in the collection, or a favourite exhibition?

I love going to the Galleria Italia because I feel like I am in a completely different place outside of the city. Even though you can see Dundas Street through the windows, I still feel like I am in another place. The high ceiling, the looming brown pillars, makes for a creative atmosphere.

How do you feel you contribute to our Strategic Plan and the AGO’s success?

I think that one step at a time, and one project at a time, I will be able to contribute to Goal #4 Support our people. As part of the staff and volunteer resources team, I believe that people are key to the success of the organization. They contribute to creating the success, culture, and the direction of an organization. My aim to ensure both staff and volunteers have the resources and support they need to excel and grow more.
