Comic Illustration Performances Complement Emily Carr Exhibition

As part of Seneca’s sponsorship of the AGO exhibition From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia, students from the College’s Independent Illustration diploma program have been creating “live comics” in response to the exhibition during the AGO’s free Wednesday nights, April 15th and 22nd. Don’t miss the remaining two nights:

April 29: 6 to 8:30 pm
May 6: 6 to 8:30 pm

For every “performance,” students are provided a page from an essay about or by Emily Carr that appears in the exhibition’s companion catalogue, curated by Sarah Milroy. They have one hour of prep time ahead of the event to review their assigned page and correlating image references before sitting down with an arsenal of markers and pencils for the 2.5-hour live drawing event. After the event, AGO patrons can view the illustrations, in order, as a visual representation of the entire essay.

These illustrative performances are led by Seneca faculty JoAnn Purcell and Martha Newbigging, who wanted to engage youth and student groups by featuring the voice of the comic to view artwork in new ways.

Be sure to check them out while you still can! Read more about the live comic performances in this article in Applied Art Magazine
