National Volunteer Week 2013

National Volunteer Week is a week-long celebration where we pause to thank and recognize our volunteers. This year’s celebration will include:

  • Free coffee, tea and cookies all week long in the Volunteer Lounge (please be patient, as – with the exception of Monday when coffee will be served at 9:00am – the Cafe does not open until 10:30)
  • A Volunteer week shopping discount of 25% off regularly priced merchandise (10% off jewellery) in the gift shop
  • A schedule of special talks and tours from AGO staff just for you (details below)

Tuesday, April 23rd, 11-12pm: Canadian Art Favourites with Greg Humeniuk

  • Greg Humeniuk (Curatorial Assistant, Canadian) will be speaking about some of his Canadian art favourites and will provide a tour of part of the Canadian collection

Wednesday, April 24th, 11-12pm: Into the Archives with Marilyn Nazar

  • Marilyn Nazar (Archivist, Library & Archives) will be giving us a closer look at the archives and some archival pieces, and will speak about how these relate to specific exhibitions

Wednesday, April 24th, 7:00pm – 8:30pm: Screening of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry

  • Greg Baszun (Chief Media Technologist, Media Productions) will be providing a special private screening of Ai Weiwei: Never Sorryprolific and internationally recognized contemporary Chinese artist

Thursday, April 25th, 11:00am – 12:00pm: Mounts in the Renaissance with John Williams 

  • John Williams (Collection Specialist and Mountmaker) will be taking us through Revealing the Renaissance: Stories and Secrets in Florentine Art to discuss mounts for this exhibition and some of the challenges of mountmaking unique to each exhibition

Thursday, April 25th, 2:00pm – 3:00pm: Canadian Female Artists with Georgiana Uhlyarik

  • Georgiana Uhlyark (Assistant Curator, Canadian) will lead us through the McLean Center for Canadian Art and will focus on the work of Canadian women artists

Friday, April 26th, 2:00pm – 3:00pm: 

  • David Wistow (Interpretive Planner, Education) will give us a sneak peek of our upcoming exhibition of works by Sorel Etrog, ‘The Grand Old Man of Canadian Sculpture’, and will discuss interpretive strategies for this and other exhibitions

If you cannot attend a talk or tour that you have registered for, please re-call the appropriate RSVP line so that we may open your place to another volunteer.

All talks and tours start on time – please arrive 10 minutes prior to start time to check in. Timely attendance is important so that we can escort the group collectively to the appropriate location. Please wear your badge.
